A turn, start to finish

1

Turn one card

Any ordinary deck. The suit says where you walked, the number says what you found there.

2

Write what happened

Three sentences is a turn. The book asks you one question and you answer it in your own hand.

3

Make the page

It names the paper and the piece to use. Make a quick page or a full one, whichever suits you that day.

“It seems confusing when you start but if you keep at it the pieces come ❤ together ❤ but you have to stay with it. I'm having so much fun creating a journal this way. I wish I could add pictures to show my work. I drew two face cards and an ace my first three plays. A bit confusing to say the least but I make the rules. Oh I forgot there are no rules. I'm still figuring out the naming of pages? People names? Event names? Whimsical names? Hmmm”

“Once my journal was set up, I felt very free to approach the page without worry or stress about what I was going to do.”

“There are, of course, many to choose from and after much deliberation I chose this one as my first… A year of prompts (52) and each journalling prompt also comes with a crafting/maker prompt… Enchanting.”

“This is looking to be a great trigger for a fun new interactive art journal… I’m in the process of building extra layers into it by drawing from my collection of tarot and oracle cards… Also drawing from my massive paper and collage stash.”

A layered paper journal card from the kit

You never face a blank page

Turn one card. The book tells you where you walked, what the wood gave up, and what belongs on the page. You write it in your own words and make it. No staring.

A hand-designed tag from the kit

You do not have to choose

Not the theme, not the colours, not who you are. Three cards decide your keeper before the first turn. Two people playing this never end up with the same person holding the pencil.

A stag from the kit

It actually finishes

Fifty-two cards and the deck runs out. Some pages are quick and some are full. At the end you are holding a finished book instead of another journal with four pages in it.

Before you buy

Do I need to be able to draw?

No. Nothing in the game asks you to draw. You cut, tear, glue and write. The artwork is already made and printed by you.

What if I stop for a while?

Nothing happens. There is no streak and no schedule. The deck waits. You play at your own pace: a turn a day or a turn a week is up to you.

Is this a subscription?

No. One payment, files are yours, nothing renews and nothing expires.

What do I actually receive?

PDFs, immediately after payment, by email and on the order page. The game, the component sheets, and with the bundle the papers and ephemera. You print what you need at home.

Do I need special paper or a good printer?

Ordinary US Letter or A4 and any home printer. The junk journal papers are built to print edge to edge on Letter.

What if it is not for me?

Look at what you have bought, and if it is not what you hoped email me before you download the files and I will refund you.

“Thank you! This is looking to be a great trigger for a fun new interactive art journal. I think this would be a wonderful game on its own but I'm in the process of building extra layers into it by drawing from my collection of tarot and oracle cards, many of which are forest/nature themed. Also drawing from my massive paper and collage stash.”

What buyers say

★★★★★

“What a fun little game! I’m a professional artist, and surprisingly being given specific instructions to go ahead and do things badly is freeing and fun! I can’t wait to see how my year in the forest progresses!”

“I discovered this by accident. Or did I? I have always journaled but this is taking it to a completely new dimension. I love the quiet time it gives me at the end of the day. I love the fact it allows my imagination to run riot following a small prompt. I love the fact I do not need to be an artist and there are many lovely things as part of the kit which can be supplemented with stickers alongside the writing. Excellent value for money.”

Before you buy

I have never played a solo journaling game. Can I do this?

Yes. The rules are short, and the book walks you through your first turn one step at a time before it asks you to do anything.

Do I need other players?

No. It is played alone, in your own journal. Nobody reads it unless you show them.

What do I need to play?

A deck of playing cards, a journal, a printer, something to write with and something to stick with. No dice.

How long does a session take?

There is no fixed length. You play at your own pace: a turn a day or a turn a week is up to you.

How many turns is it?

Fifty-two cards, one card a turn. When the deck runs out, the book is finished.

What do I do with a “Thread”?

Some finds carry a third line marked Thread. You do not copy it into your journal. It tells you which of the four running stories that turn’s find belongs to: the name, the gate, the record, or the white stag. When no Thread line has turned up for a few turns, ask yourself which of the four this turn’s find belongs to, because it always belongs to one.

Do I have to be able to draw?

No. Where the book asks for a drawing, the instruction is to do it badly and label it anyway.

Can I play it in a journal I already have?

Yes. That is how it is built. Every entry goes into your own journal, and nothing in it asks you to cut up or use up something you own.

Do I need to print it?

The book you can read on a screen. The component sheets are meant to be printed and cut. Every page is US Letter, so it comes off a home printer on a standard sheet and prints on A4 without trouble, and an ink-saver copy of each file comes in the download.

What size are the pages?

US Letter, 8.5 x 11 inches, throughout. The book, the component sheets and the papers in the bundle editions are all the same size, so anything you print comes off a standard sheet with nothing cropped.

Is it a PDF?

Yes. Everything in the download is a print-ready PDF at US Letter size and 300 DPI. There is no software to install and nothing to unzip. The link is on the order confirmation and in your account.
